The last few years have seen a sea of change in the practice of law. Advances in technology affecting practice management, cybersecurity, AI, marketing, legal ethics, greater attention to personal well-being, and new perspectives on client and public expectations have driven changes to the practice not dreamed of only a few years ago. So, how do solo and small firm lawyers - especially those wishing to launch their own firms - plan for and navigate these and other seismic shifts in the business and practice of law?
This special two-day seminar and interactive workshop is designed to provide practical guidance on how to create, grow, and manage a solo or small firm practice in these volatile times. Our faculty of experienced lawyers will offer insights on the lessons they have learned in their own law firm journeys on how to navigate and avoid the business, personal, professional, and ethical pitfalls that can derail your career. You will also hear sound advice from accounting, marketing, and IT authorities. Participants will even get the unique opportunity to create a personalized business plan during a half-day interactive workshop.
This program is designed for lawyers who are already practicing in a small or solo practice environment, as well as for lawyers who are contemplating a career shift.
Registration is limited to 50 participants. Register now and combine twelve full hours of MCLE - including a hour of ethics and an hour of Mental Health/Substance Abuse - with the most powerful and practical program we have ever held to benefit lawyers in small firm and solo practices.
This seminar is a basic to intermediate level program.
This program qualifies for 13.5 MCLE credit hours, including up to 1.0 LEPR credit hour and 1.0 SA/MH credit hour.

How to Engage with Accounting, IT and Marketing.
Douglas W. Kim, Kim, Lahey & Killough Law Firm, Greenville
In
this segment, Doug will host a question answer session with subject matter
experts serving as panelists in three areas: Accounting, Marketing and IT and
Data Security. When running a business, including a law firm, having your
“team” in place can be critical. There are eight areas that generally need
addressing and a founder is usually equipped to handle two, maybe three areas.
Therefore, having your team in place to provide expertise and support in the
other areas is critical.
This portion is designed to assist with the knowledge that the business owner (law firm founder or owner) needs to effectively communicate with the team, not micromanage, comply with applicable Rules or Professional Conduct, have a team that works together and understand the "business of law.”

Closing Argument: Addressing Stress &
Burnout in the Legal Profession
Beth Padgett, South Carolina Bar Lawyers Helping Lawyers
Studies have highlighted the substantial rates of behavioral health problems present in the legal community. One recent study of lawyers found that 28% of participants experienced depression, 20% screened positive for potentially alcohol-dependent drinking, 19% experienced severe anxiety, and 11.5% had experienced suicidal thoughts. During this program, we will examine behavior health problems present in the legal community and will provide you with an opportunity to assess your own burnout levels.
Strategies for addressing these concerns will be examined. In addition, attendees will learn about educational resources related to mental health, wellness, and self-care to enhance their knowledge of their duties of competence, diligence, and honesty in the practice of law.
