Live Webcast: School’s in Session – Hot Topics in Education Law for 2023
Tags: Education; Big Ticket
The Education Law Committee has assembled an engaging group of attorneys to explore an array of developments in the education landscape. Topics to be covered include how the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act relates to student discipline; Title IX requirements for K-12 schools; the intersection of FERPA and South Carolina's Freedom of Information Act; and the anticipated effects of pending U.S. Supreme Court cases on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion initiatives in higher education. Additionally, a mental health presentation focused on emotional intelligence and an ethics component will be offered.
Lawyers are often high-functioning, driven, and accomplished people. But those characteristics can also often mask a failure of true self-awareness. Our wellness (SA/MH) hour features an insightful and challenging presentation by Henry Deneen, a practicing attorney and Founder of Blindspot Solutions. Henry will explore how lawyers can learn the skills necessary to see themselves as others - clients, colleagues, judges, family and friends, and opposing counsel - see them. The lawyer's journey to self-awareness may be challenging, but it's not as difficult as it may seem. The rewards can be transformational in terms of career satisfaction, professional effectiveness, and personal growth as a practitioner and individual.
The Rules of Professional Conduct hold lawyers accountable for the misconduct of their subordinates; however, regulation and discipline merely set a minimum standard of conduct. The foundation of a functioning legal system is the public's confidence in the integrity of legal professionals. Our ethics (LEPR) hour offers strategies to help lawyers in leadership roles develop an ethical culture in their organizations to not only ensure compliance with the Rules, but also reflect the values of the profession and meet the expectations of clients and the public.
This seminar is a basic to intermediate level program.
This program qualifies for 6.0 MCLE; 1.0 LEPR; 1.0 SA/MH
