About the Seminar
The unauthorized practice of law threatens the quality of legal advice the public receives. Under certain circumstances, the unauthorized practice of law might also have serious ethical or business implications for the attorney who supervises non-attorney staff, or whose clients provide advice or consulting services. For example, could you have clients - perhaps consulting firms or other professionals - who provide legal advice without appreciating what they are doing? Are you or your clients being threatened by professionals who are unwittingly providing legal advice? Are those clients' customer bases perhaps being threatened by competitors with good form books? Should an engineer be meeting with a municipal code enforcement officer to justify the drawings he is preparing for your client? Is an overly enthusiastic member of your staff saying a little too much to your clients? Once you've sued someone and she calls your staff to ask what the next step is in the process, what should your staff tell her? Learn the pros and cons, the ins and outs, and the ethical traps of UPL at this powerful and practical half-day seminar. The program will be a highly interactive panel discussion led by an experienced faculty of practitioners, as well as Judge Stephanie McDonald of the South Carolina Court of Appeals.
This program is geared to benefit lawyers whose paralegals speak with clients or the public, lawyers who's clients are consultants, and lawyers whose own practices or those of their clients are threatened by consulting firms.
