Every lawyer - but especially young lawyers just starting their careers or hanging out a shingle - need to understand some basic accounting principles, including how accountants (forensic and otherwise) can help their cases and indeed, help keep their practices vibrant and on a sound ethical footing.
This special seminar, designed by veteran family law attorney Anita Floyd Lee and veteran personal injury attorney Daryl Hawkins, will provide you with a basic understanding of law firm and litigation accounting principles.
The morning session focuses on the role of accounting experts in the Family Court arena. Special emphasis will be given to explain how accountants not only don't take your business, they can actually make the difference in how effectively you represent your clients' financial interests. The morning faculty will also teach you how to read and understand basic financial and tax reporting forms and your client's Financial Declaration. There will also be analysis of the W-2 income and deductions, how to decipher pay stubs and tax returns. You'll gain a deeper understanding of tax issues in divorce - alimony tax deductibility, the child tax and dependent care tax credits, college tax credits, and attorneys and experts fees. Finally, you will learn how and when to do a QDRO.
The afternoon session features accounting principles who practices in a solo or small firm setting should know and understand. Topics to be covered are “how to read and understand a business balance sheet, profit and loss statement, understanding a client's net worth with regard to an award of punitive damages, and a special hour of ethics that will cover trust accounting principles, safe-keeping of client property, and cybersecurity.
This program is the kind of practical information you need in order to practice law as a business! It's the kind of program that can help you thrive financially and steer you clear of some very serious ethical traps!
