About the Seminar
Trial advocacy consists of a variety of skills that collectively equip a lawyer to effectively and persuasively represent her clients in judicial and administrative proceedings. The broad range of skills necessary to be a good trial advocate include the ability to examine witnesses, present legal and factual arguments, and address and be comfortable in front of a jury. Advocacy skills also include the ability to persuade others to your point of view, which depends to a large extent on being competent and having others – specifically the judge and the jury – view you as such. Competency requires not only a full and complete understanding of the facts of the case and the governing law, but also of the rules of evidence.
This program focuses on evidence advocacy. It will address effective evidence advocacy, problem areas for lawyers and judges, nine categories of evidence (using, for the most part, the South Carolina Rules of Evidence as guideposts). The written materials will address the substantive law related to the evidence to be discussed and include practical and strategic tips. The oral presentations will focus on the advocacy aspects and address several different evidence hypotheticals
