About the Seminar
This year's Military & Veterans' Law CLE seminar will provide instruction on important topics attorneys in South Carolina will encounter when representing veterans and military members. For those who practice in VA law, this course will provide the three hours needed to obtain or maintain your accreditation. This portion of the seminar includes Sandra Newell from the Columbia Regional Office, who will discuss VA appeals, including the process an appeal follows at the Regional Office.
The session will also feature COL (Retired) Tara Osborn, former Chief Trial Judge of the Army - A must-see for anyone who is, or plans to be a Military JAG officer or who represents military member defendants! Programming will also include a meaningful discussion regarding two topics that greatly affect current and former military members: 1) The Department of Defense has formalized new guidance on discharge upgrades as it relates to PTSD and other mental health disorders, and 2) the US Supreme Court recently issued Howell v Howell which clarifies how to treat retired military pay and VA benefits offsets in a divorce proceeding.
This seminar is for anyone who practices VA law in South Carolina and surrounding states. Attorneys who practices military law, whether as a JAG or as defendant's counsel, are encouraged to attend! Due to the large number of former military members in South Carolina, most attorneys will encounter issues with military discharges or family law issues at some point in their careers - better to be prepared!
