Over the past four years since his return from serving as a Supreme Court justice in the Republic of Palau, Ashby has been invited to deliver his speech, Be the Light, to over 50 different organizations throughout the country, including delivering a keynote address, alongside U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, and giving presentations to the American College of Trial Lawyers' Annual Meeting in Hawaii, as well as the Defense Research Institute's Annual Meeting in San Francisco. A former musician and Supreme Court justice, Ashby's speech weaves wildly different themes-the story of the blues legend, Leadbelly, the history of the Supreme Court of an island nation in paradise, Ashby's time in jail as a young man, and the importance of storytelling in jury trials-into a beautiful speech about the importance of human connection in the law, and our role as lawyers and judges to create meaningful human connection in the world.

Speaker: R. Ashby Pate
