About the Seminar Surveys have shown that lawyers have higher rates of mental illnesses than the general population and that lawyers are reluctant to ask for help when they are experiencing mental or emotional distress. While untreated depression (or other mental illnesses) can cause professionalism to suffer it can also lead to suicide. The characteristics of lawyers, aspects of the legal profession, and negative life events can create a perfect storm wherein suicide becomes an option In this one-hour CLE participants will learn the signs often exhibited by lawyers who are contemplating suicide and practice the steps they can use to prevent a colleague from completing the act. While the topic of suicide is challenging and stressful, it is the presenter's goal that by participating in this CLE, lawyers might become more competent and confident in their abilities to provide assistance to their colleagues in distress, eliminating some of the stress that diminishes their capacity to best serve their clients, profession, and communities.
