Shane Read began his career at the law firm Akin Gump then spent 30 years as a civil and criminal Assistant United States Attorney during which time he tried hundreds of cases. He is the author of award-winning and bestselling textbooks on persuasion, deposition, and trial skills. He is a graduate of Yale University, the University of Texas School of Law, and serves as an adjunct professor at S.M.U.’s Dedman School of Law.

After his first trial after law school, he realized almost everything he had been taught about persuasion in a courtroom was wrong. He was determined to figure out what worked and spent every spare moment watching trials. He saw a lot of lawyers making the same mistakes that he had made, but a few great trial lawyers were doing something completely different. The great lawyers he studied followed a common set of principles of persuasion that led to success. The excitement he felt when he witnessed these principles being executed in high-stakes cases and then in his own trials made him want to share this knowledge with others.

Come join your colleagues on Friday, February 16 and learn the secrets of persuasion that have transformed Shane’s career and can transform yours also!

This lecture provides a new approach to persuasive public speaking that great trial lawyers and oral advocates use. You will learn how to 1) be true to yourself, 2) speak from your heart to persuade, 3) WIN (learn the needs of your judge or jury), 4) think of conversations and visual presentations with the judge or jury instead of arguments, 5) make the complicated simple, 6) always strive to get better, and 7) tell a compelling story.

10:00 – 10:30 a.m. Gestures and Delivery

Learn how to gesture and its importance. This interactive program will explain the science behind why it is essential to gesture and teach you how to gesture naturally.

10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. How to Tell a Compelling Story and Use Insights from Brain Science to Persuade

With these clear and concise principles, you can elevate your persuasion skills immediately and tell a compelling story. A compelling story involves 1) having a bottom-line-message, 2) having a story with at least one human truth, 3) using a captivating structure that starts strong, 4) using descriptive language, 5) telling the good, the bad, and the ugly about your case, 6) connecting your client with the emotions of the judge or jury, and 7) basing your story on the law that governs your case. All of these principles will be discussed in the context of the ethical requirements that lawyers must follow.

12:00 – 1:15 p.m. Lunch

1:15 – 2:15 p.m. Use Creative and Memorable Visual Aids

2:15 – 3:15 p.m. How to Not Use Notes

Through innovative techniques, you will learn how to speak confidently and persuasively without notes. You will learn how to separate yourself from the pack by making eye contact with the judge or jury, speaking about important ideas instead of trying to memorize every word, and learning the persuasive power that comes from knowing that your delivery without notes is the best way to communicate.

3:15 – 3:30 p.m. Afternoon Break

3:30  – 4: 30 p.m. Learn Ethics from the Master Trial Lawyers
