The second, Termination of Parental Rights, explores the process when a voluntary consent to an adoption is not available and courts must consider when to judicially terminate parental rights. The third, New Frontiers in Family Formation, delves into what popular culture and some commentators refer to as "the modern family." Recognizing that the traditional nuclear family is now the minority of families, the chapter focuses on the growing number of children who are raised in different family formations, such as by single parents, same-gender parents, and parents living in separate households. This chapter also addresses advances in the law and protections for children born as the result of collaborative reproduction: donor eggs, donor sperm, and gestational surrogacy. The book's sixth chapter, The Best Interest of the Child, offers reflections on how far we have come in promoting children's best interests and meeting their needs.
